Evidences of Christianity

There are many proofs--infallible proofs, as Dr. Luke said (Acts 1:3)--that encourage us all toward faith in the God of the Bible. The question is, are we willing to listen to the evidence and with an honest heart make our decisions accordingly? Think with us for just a little while as we examine a few things.

The Existence of God

What comes from nothing? That's right, nothing. Nothing can only produce nothing. Something is; therefore, something has always been. What is that Something that has always been? Well, let's look at the something that is here. It is the universe--the greatest measure of expanse and power and existence. The more we study it, the larger and more beyond us it looms. Many scientists say the universe had a beginning and it will have an end.

In this universe we find immense amounts of power controlled to precision. The systems within the universe are so precise we can literally set our watches by them. Yet, no watch sets itself. Tops do not spin themselves. Nor do star systems. An outside controlling force has to act on the system to "wind it up" and control its loss of energy to do work. Yet, here is this universe working.

No system creates itself; no system sustains itself, not in this universe. There is no perpetual motion. Machines do not run themselves. The universe and every system in it demonstrate a running down, a degeneration of itself. Only in fantasy do things create and manage themselves.

Look at what is in this universe: life, intelligence, self-awareness. Where do acts of intelligence come from except from intelligence? To believe otherwise means you believe in a capricious universe where magic rules, and you can't even be sure of that. But chances are you run your life understanding that every effect has to have an adequate cause; because if you don't, you won't be around long in this world.

So here is a universe, and everything in it, which is not eternal, which cannot make or even sustain itself. What is the adequate Cause for such existence? The only One who fits the evidence reasonably is the God of the Bible (Hebrews 3:4)--eternal, intelligent, all-powerful, self-aware, and involved with us. Therefore, it is unreasonable to refuse to believe.

The Bible

If God made us intelligent beings able to communicate, He certainly would be expected to communicate with us. And there is no better way than to communicate one message over time, preserve that communication for all time, and insure that all intelligent beings can have access to it. If we can reason, it makes sense to look for a reasonable communication from God. And of course, we have just such a communication--the Holy Bible.

This Book is perfect, beyond human imagination, yet written for humans to understand. It is indestructible. It cannot "die." It brings human beings up to their highest moral potential and rebukes anything less. It expresses the culture of the times in which it was written (a verification of its truth) but its principles are beyond culture, thus fitting into any culture, society, or time. It alone answers every question we have as human beings. And in its perfection it pronounces itself absolute. There is no other "revelation" to be heard (I Timothy 1:3; II Timothy 3:16, 17; Revelation 22:12-21), which makes our approach to God so simple that all may come to God by it.

Only God can produce perfection. And this perfection is found only in this Book.

Jesus Christ

The theme of the Bible is Jesus Christ of Nazareth. He is pictured and presented as the Chosen One of God for the salvation of all humanity. He is also the King of all kings, and the One in whose hand is our judgment.

The Old Testament, the first 39 books of the Bible, gradually unfolds what kind of Savior would come. Hundreds of prophecies are recorded over a period of 1400 years. Though there have been many claims, there has been only One whose claim held, whose life has fulfilled every expectation found in the Old Testament of God. In the New Testament, the last 27 books of the Bible, is the proof of this fulfillment.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem, reared in Nazareth, ministered in Galilee, accomplished great and unique healing miracles, was rejected by His own people, was crucified by Jew and Gentile, buried, and was raised back to life three days later. His resurrected life is verified by many who knew Him before He was put to death. In His sacrifice He proclaims forgiveness to all who come to God through Him. He now rules from heaven awaiting the Last Day set by God the Father for ultimate Judgement upon every human being.

Conclusion

If the Bible demonstrates itself valid in all proofs, and claims for itself the title "Word of God," then reason demands it be accepted as true in all unverifiable aspects. If in its message we find the One whose claims are totally consistent with the evidence presented, it is only reasonable to believe those claims. It is unreasonable to deny them. Truly, the word says, "The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God,'" (Psalm 14:1).
